21 Point Search Engine Optimization Check List

Although not by any means complete, here are some effective ways you can optimize your webpage for search engine recognition.

  1. Check for key word density (about 3% for your main key word).
  2. Make sure your title tag has your main keyword in it (search engines weight this heavily).
  3. Add useful, interesting content regularly. Search engines note additions to content.
  4. Make sure your heading tags have key words in them especially the heading 1 tag.
  5. Create anchor tags with a key word in them. (Not portfolio.html but copywriterporfolio.html. Not contact.html but contactcopywriter.html).
  6. Work to get external links (extremely important;this takes time).
  7. Do not use the following: flash animations (especially on your homepage), frames, and tables as they range from impossible to hard to read for search engines.
  8. Do use CSS (cascading style sheets). Doing so helps the search engine read your site easier.
  9. Submit your website to major search engines
  10. Submit your website to as many directories as possible.
  11. Localize your site by placing your address on every major page.
  12. Keep adding pages as more content is better.
  13. Search engines will not read keywords in images so make sure you have included keywords in your text.
  14. Do not embed javascript inside html pages. Use an external file to store your javascript.
  15. Use a tool like WordTracker to pick keywords for your site.
  16. Use external CSS files for styling.
  17. Use bold and italic for key words.
  18. Use key words in your content pages as early as possible. First sentence or at least first paragraph. Use keywords throughout the page.
  19. Remember that the age of your site counts, so stay with it. Don't change the domain name of your site unless you really have a bad one to start with.
  20. Write a good description of your site in the "description" meta tag because search engines often use this when they return their results.
  21. Use a string of key words in the "keywords" meta tag.

Revamp your website using this checklist to achieve search engine optimization. Hire a copywriter who understands HTML code and the importance of meta tags. Provide your copywriter with keywords for your product or industry. Word tracker is one of the best tools for grabbing the best keywords.

Make sure your webmaster understands how to use Google analytics or some other tool to analyze what is happening on your site. This is the equivalent of testing in Direct Marketing. This testing is a proven money maker when done properly.

Although search engine marketing takes more time to develop and is a more complex process to implement, it can reap great rewards down the line. The secret is to start with the simple steps and improve your site over time.
